How'd you do that?

FAQ's on how wigs are made

Luckily, we love what we do, and consider the act of wigmaking a sort of joyful "moving meditation" that lets us create unique pieces of wearable art. We also listen to a LOT of podcasts, CBC radio, and audio books while we work, to try to keep our minds as nimble as our fingers.

Q. How do you make a wig?

A. One or two hairs at a time.  On rare occasion, 3 at a time. First we create a foundation out of a fine synthetic mesh we call "lace", and using a tiny crochet-like hook, we knot the hair into the foundation, taking care to mimic natural hair growth patterns.

Q. How long does it take to make a wig?

A. If we're making a custom wig from scratch, it can take 40 - 60 hours to complete.

Q. Do you make all those theatre wigs from scratch?

A. No, the cost would be prohibitive. Instead, we order in pre-made wigs and only add custom lace fronts. This only takes about 8-10 hours of labour.

Q. Do you make facial and body hair, too?

A. Oh yes. Moustaches, goatees, soul patches, sideburns, beards, eyebrows, chest hair, merkins, Hobbit feet ... you name it, we've probably already done it. We use a film-quality lace for all facial hair, and use permed yak hair when possible, as yak has the same coarse texture of human facial/body hair.

Q. Can I sell you my hair?

A. No, thank you.  We'd rather that you consider donating it to the Canadian Cancer Society via our friends at Eva & Co. Wigs' hair donation program.
